It was for neighbors and my parents were always home those nights in case I needed them for something. I also babysat for relatives at age eleven (and they were infants). It was also for short nights (maybe 3-4 hours tops) and not on school nights. But, I was also a very responsible and mature eleven year old.
By 13 I was babysitting for anyone and everyone and later at night and on school nights, etc. By then, I had also taken CPR classes and Babysitting classes (usually YMCA's and hospitals offer these).
If you are a young adult looking to babysit, I'd talk to your parents about what it takes to be a responsible babysitter and see if you can start doing it for an hour or two at a time - maybe while a neighbor runs to the grocery store or something. You might also want to come up with a checklist of questions to ask your potential employer - so that they know you are serious about this. Stuff like:
What is your child(ren's) favorite book? Toy? What is the bedtime routine? How many books do you read before bed? Are they allowed to get out of bed at any time or must they call for me? (that was a rule in our house. If I woke up in the middle of the night or when I woke in the morning (unless I had to go to the bathroom), I couldn't get out of my bed. I had to let my parents know I was up and then they'd come get me)!!
If you're an adult looking for a babysitter, I'd suggest the same. I just hired a 12 year old to start watching my toddler. I had her come over on a couple of Saturday afternoons while I was home to play with him and see how they got along. Then, I'd start leaving to run to the store or beauty parlor or whatever, to see how they'd do for an hour or two together.
Now, they are sitting for us on a regular basis and my child is so excited to hear the babysitter is coming.
Sorry this was so long, but hopefully I helped out a bit. |
