I had to read it for English at the beginning of this year. I was surprised. I thought that it was one of the most thought-provoking books I have ever read. It even won the Newberry Medal in 1994 (this is the most prestigious award in literature).
I recommend this book to anyone older than 10. The content might go over the heads of kids younger than 11. You're right, it is a bit complex for younger kids, but I read it and I thought it was amazing. Very deep, and a whole lot of insight. I am glad you liked it too!

I read it a long time ago. I don't remember if I liked it or didn't but I'm pretty sure I did. Haha. | | | 11-16-2009, 09:48 PM | #5 | Zeph. 3:17 Gifted Join Date: Jan 2008 Posts: 14,185 | Re: The Giver Originally Posted by Sararoxmysox OMG, yes, and I loved it! ~Sara Yeah. It's not inappropriate, but it's just hard to understand if you're young.
Right now, I am reading one of the companion novels to it, it's called Gathering Blue. Then there is another one, called Messenger. | | | 11-16-2009, 09:49 PM | #6 | I Hate Hackers! What a great way to put the name out there! I am going to have to get it and read it again - I forgot about that one! | | | 11-16-2009, 11:29 PM | #8 | Webkinz :) Join Date: Nov 2009 Posts: 1,023 | Re: The Giver I had to read it for 5th grade, so I don't remember it much, I just remember liking it | | | 11-16-2009, 11:33 PM | #9 | Gift Guru Join Date: Sep 2008 Posts: 3,878 | Re: The Giver It is very interesting because I just saw that book at Barnes & Nobles today. They were displayed at the shelf for "recommended reading for the 5th graders." I was looking for some Christmas gifts for someone around that age and I almost bought it, but decided not to since I did not know anything about the book nor the author. Now that a lot of you guys are saying that it is a great book, I think I will go back there and pick up a copy tomorrow. | | | 11-16-2009, 11:36 PM | #10 | Gift Guru Join Date: Jul 2008 Posts: 4,710 | Re: The Giver I read it in 8th grade, and I liked it, but I thought the ending was a little too ambiguous for me! | | | | | | Currently Active Users Viewing This Thread: 1 (0 members and 1 guests) | | | | Thread Tools | | | Display Modes | Linear Mode | Posting Rules | You may not post new threads You may not post replies You may not post attachments You may not edit your posts HTML code is Off
