The webkinz news site has the following statement about why doug gives kc:

What happens when I don’t succeed?
If you don’t succeed for two quests in a row, you move back down one level. You will then have to complete this level again, and Doug will give you KinzCash instead of the prize you got last time.


So, the way to not get kc, is if you don't have the gems Doug is looking for, don't accept the quest, & try again the next day.

But how do you know if you have the gems Doug is looking for before you accept the quest? All it says is "I'm looking for a common gem, a common gem, a common gem. Do you accept the quest?" Now, I keep giving him gems and only getting a little bit of KC and I'm getting frustrated.

You can use this chart as a guide, it was taken from the 1st post of this thread. You can look at how many gems you have and if you don't have what Doug might ask for don't talk to him until you do. I persona;;y haven't spoken to Doug in weeks as I am due for the Gem Throne, but I don't have any rare gems...

What type of gem does ask for for each prize?

The numbers of gems and the types of gems vary each day, but here's a general idea of what Doug is looking for for each of the prizes:
