Did you ever wonder the history behind the traffic signal?
Garrett Morgan is credited for using a safety hood and smoke protection in 1916 when rescuing 32 men trapped in an underground explosion, which won him two gold medals.
Since the introduction and increase of automobiles - bicycles, animal-powered wagons and the new gasoline-powered motor vehicles shared the roads and streets with pedestrians and accidents were frequent. It was when Morgan witnessed an accident which prompted his to invent a traffic signal which was patented on November 20, 1923.
The Morgan traffic signal was a T-shaped pole unit that featured three positions: Stop, Go and an all-directional stop position. This "third position" halted traffic in all directions to allow pedestrians to cross streets more safely.
