Welcome to the Monday DCT. 
On this day in 1949, the world's first jet-propelled airliner, the British De Havilland Comet, makes its maiden test-flight in England and was considered a landmark British aeronautical design. . The jet engine would ultimately revolutionise the airline industry, shrinking air travel time in half by enabling planes to climb faster and fly higher.
de Havilland started out designing motorcycles and buses, but after seeing Wilbur Wright demonstrate an airplane in 1908, he decided to build one of his own.
de Havilland Aircraft Company became a leader in the aviation industry, known for developing lighter engines and faster, more streamlined planes.
This day in history:
1836 - Adelaide, South Australia founded
1866 - Completion of Atlantic telegraph cable (1,686 miles long)
1928 - Researchers at the University of Toronto discover insulin
1940 - Bugs Bunny debuts in "Wild Hare"
1983 - 104 degrees F (40.3 degrees C) in Garmersdorf (German record)
1986 - Greg Lemond is 1st American to win Tour de France
