Today in 1894, Hershey's Chocolate was founded
About the founder, Milton Hershey:
After his four year candy making apprenticeship in Lancaster, Pennsylvania, Hershey attempted to start his own candy business in 1876, but it failed. So he set off to Denver and found work with a caramel confectioner (made with fresh milk), and he opened his own business, which subsequently failed. Undeterred, he returned to Lancaster to make caramel, and pretty soon his business - Lancaster Caramel Company was shipping caramel all over America and Europe. He employed 1400 people at this time!
In 1893, at the World’s Columbian Exposition in Chicago (celebrating the 400th anniversary of Christopher Columbus landing in America), Hershey became fascinated with the art of chocolate. While in Chicago, he purchased German machinery and began producing chocolate coating for his caramels. With the growing demand of chocolate - the Hershey Chocolate Company was began. For years Hershey trialled many recipes till he struck the right formula of milk, sugar and cocoa. And voila ... the Hershey bar was mass produced!
Hershey sold his caramel business for $1 million in 1900 - this is a lot of money in 1900!) and concentrated on chocolate making, relocating to larger premises in Derry Township (convenient to the port cities where his ingredients can be imported, and close to dairy farms).
Hershey's success was so amazing a whole town was named after him. His wife Catherine established an industrial school (for orphaned children). Hershey made sure the elementary and secondary schools in Hershey were the finest there was, and he transferred most of his wealth to the Hershey Industrial School.
Today, Hershey stores can be found in several North American locations, and in Pennsylvania a whole theme park!
  
In contrast with Hershey's Chocolate today, it is also Toothache Day - please make sure you brush your teeth after chocolate.
