Can we do better? Does this July 14th Chat Thread Measure Up to the Black Diamond? A tape measure is an invaluable tool. The tape measure is one of the most common tools in a household. Many people don't even think of it as a tool, but there are only a few projects around the house that don't require the use of this tool. Hanging curtains: you need to know how long they need to be. Getting new carpet? Building a deck or adding a room? You have to know how much material to buy. Something my dad always told me; Measure twice so you only have to cut once. This will save you a lot of headache down the road. A couple of other things that you should know about tape measures. Tape measures are not a universal constant... The measurements from different tapes will often vary, most of the discrepancy will come from the metal hook at the end of the tape. As a tape is used the hook can become stretched from its rivets and add a small amount to the measurement. One little-known feature on most tape measures is a small black diamond that appears every 19.2 inches, known as the 'black truss' markings. This is used to mark out an equal five trusses per standard eight-foot sheet of building material. (8 feet, or 96 inches, divided by 5 is 19.2 inches.) Sited from ehow, this is how you read a tape measure: Step1 Look at the big number that's nearest to, but before the mark you’re trying to read. It should be a whole number. That’s how many inches you’re measuring. If the mark you're reading falls on a whole number, then that number is all the information you need. Step2 Count how many marks there are in between each inch if the mark you’re reading doesn’t fall on a whole number. Most tape measures will divide an inch into 16 equal parts, or sixteenths, but some only go down to eighths. Step3 Start at the whole number you found nearest your desired mark and count the number of marks between the whole number and the spot you're trying to read. Step4 Read the final number as "inch and fraction." For example, if your nearest whole number is two and there are five marks between your spot and the whole number, then your measurement would be "two and five-sixteenths" (on a tape measure with inches divided into 16 equal parts). Step5 Simplify the number, if necessary. Fractions are expressed in the smallest numbers possible, so twelve sixteenths would be reduced to three fourths. Why am I telling you all about tape measures? Well today is it's birthday. The design on which most modern spring tape measures are built was patented by Alvin J. Fellows on July 14, 1868. According to the text of his patent, Fellows' tape measure was only an improvement on other versions previously designed. Speaking of birthdays, did you know that abbykinz has a birthday today too? Everyone make sure you tell abbykinz Happy Birthday! It is the start of a new week, so I wish everyone great fun!
