I finally finished! Here it is: I’m Robby Lemur and on behalf of “Lifestyles of the Recyclable and Environmentally Friendly” recently had the opportunity to visit a stunning loft hotel suite in the heart of downtown Kinzville. The suite is on the second floor of a building slated for demolition and saved thanks to the efforts of a local historical preservation committee headed by Ysolde Yorkie and Picara Poodle. Everything in this loft looks with an eye toward green design. The windows are just large enough to allow for light and ventilation without allowing excess heat loss or gain. White walls help reflect light and save energy, while the vintage exposed brick adds visual interest. The original pine floors were repaired with reclaimed pine and given a whitewash finish with low VOC paint, again to maximize the available light. The vintage beds are dressed in organic cotton linens and their low construction allows pets to take advantage of the cooler temperatures near the floor on warm summer nights. Tatami mats made of fast-growing and readily available reeds muffle footfalls and keep pets’ paws comfortable. Repurposed student chairs make for fun and functional furnishings, along with a shelf and trunk constructed of sustainably grown bamboo. The whimsical stump that serves as a nightstand came from an invasive tree species removed from the courtyard. All the art was created by local artists using low VOC paint on repurposed canvas remnants. Finally, ponytail palms help to clean the air and serve as a literal reminder of what our efforts are meant to protect. Yes, as this hotel shows us, it really IS easy (and beautiful) to be green. |
