 Can I make my own contest? Do you have to be at a certain status? I have awesome ideas for contests. .. . Please let me know if you have read anything about regular people being able to create their own contest and specifying the award gifts

Yes your status affects the kind of contest that you can host. As a Webkinz, you can only hold a contest with common food as prize. They are held in this forum:
Member Contests for Food
Please make sure that you read all the blue stickied threads at the top of that forum. There are rules (they are for everyone's protection  ) and your contest will get deleted if it doesn't meet all the rules.

The WI staff has to ask you, if they notice you. You have to be I think 20 or older?  And if you ask (not pointing fingers), it lowers your chance of becoming one.

Contests are a fun way to make friends on WI.
Make sure you read the rules and follow them all.
It is a big undertaking because you have to be online to monitor your contest
or no one will want to play.
but if you commit to it, you will have a successful contest and make some friends
