Have you followed the guides on WI for which mines have certain gems? I do not tip Arte at all, but I buy lots of rares and have been at his friendlist level for some time.

If you've been searching for two years, you must have quite a few gems, plot their location in one of the charts here:

The Gem Hunt Chart

This will help you to figure out which mines contain the gems that you are still missing. You have to be in the correct mine. Once in the right mine, it doesn't matter which rock you click, it's all random. Tipping has nothing to do with the Gem Hunt, it's for the Curio Shop levels of friendliness with Arte.
