Your explanation fits with my observations--you just said it better!

I've finally figured out a hunt pattern that works pretty well for me--I choose the mine with the Gem of the day (I usually need at least one of that color). If I have several of the gem I find, I sell it back. I keep two (or three if its the top gem on the pyramid) and sell back the rest.

By doing this, I've gotten four crowns so far. Works better than any of the other patterns I've tried.
