SEE NOTE 08/08/09 UPDATE: Sat, 06.22.09 NOTE 08/08/09: My laptop crashed. All of my files for the gardening were on it. I will attempt to recover the files but not sure if I can. If not, I am not sure what this will mean for future stats. Sorry.
The battle has begun! Carrots and Strawberries are neck to neck! The suspense, the anticipation... where will this battle lead?! Nobody knows, not even WW!!
WW gardening has undergone MANY changes since gardening was introduced. In order to keep on top of the profitability of the plants, there needs to be ongoing tracking. I began tracking the profitability of the seeds November 2008. The thread will remain a work in progress, as the stats are forever changing!
=========================================================================
STAT UPDATE (Mon., June 22, 2009):
The Carrots remain the winners! They've been in the lead for so long, they keep asking "Strawberries, who??" I am sorry to say (well not really) that I had lots of yummy strawberry jam. (I told you that I reached my breaking point with their nonstop whining! It was the bestest jam ever!!) The profit difference between the two at almost 4 months with 75 seeds is a whopping $125. If you've already got your strawberry plants, don't go digging them up because you think you'll be raking in the dough as the additional profit isn't worth it. On the other hand, if you haven't started yet or want to add more gardens with a higher profit, carrots are the way to go!
Once again, the loser crown goes to TOMATOES. They have decided to keep mum on their status because I keep eyeing them and, boy, they sure would make some great tomato sauce, since they are farm fresh and all.
The watermelons, pumpkins, cabbages & corn have all banned together because they are afraid of being eaten. They want you to know that "being in the middle is the best because they will help you without the hassle of bragging or crying. why go for the plan that is going to cause you grief when you can go with the best well-rounded plant?"

Are YOU thinking of starting a garden for profit? Here's what you should know:
--> Currently, you do NOT have to water your plants, only rake. There is no advantage to watering and there is no disadvantage to not watering. We can all only hope that this is NOT a glitch and if it is, that WW NEVER fixes it!
--> 70-80 seeds/garden is what you should use. You do NOT want to overstuff the room. Well, maybe you do, if you don't mind taking the risk of a stuck pet at adoption and therefore, a stuck account. Assuming that a stuck pet is not for you, you'll want to ensure that each door has at least 3 squares for a pet to walk out of the door. It is also highly recommended to leave some space in the middle for a pet to arrive during adoption. Leaving spaces does allow for some creative designs! If you'd like examples, please let me know.
--> You will have four (4) days to save your crops from drying up OR becoming overripe. Are you saying to yourself, "You know, there's more to life than WW!" Good news! WW recognizes that and gives you time to save your crops. But, wait there's more ... bad news! WW wants you to keep them at the top of your priority list so you cannot stay away during your week-long vacation. All crops have the same 4-day cycle. When a plant get weeds, you've got 4 days to rake. When a plant is ready to harvest, you've got 4 days to harvest. Here is an example of the pumpkin.
--> Plants do get stuck. Some people like to say that its because you don't water. That is not the case. They get stuck whether you water or do not water. Why do they get stuck? Two reasons.
- In order to avoid a delay in plant growth, you must rake daily! If you do not rake a plant with weeds, the plant cannot grow; and,

- Have you looked at those gardens? That room is looking mighty full!! It's the same concept as stuck items in rooms. You're more likely to have a stuck item if your room is overloaded. It can (and does) still happen with nearly empty rooms. Sometimes items unstick by themselves, other times they do not. Fortunately, the gardens usually unstick when you leave the room and then return. If you return in the same day, then your plant will grow as expected. If you return the next day, your plant will be a day behind. How do you ensure that your plant is not "stuck". Inspect the plant. If nothing happens, its stuck. If it says "Water" (or something else), its fine.
"How did I figure this out?", you ask. Oh that's bc I USED to water my plants. I'm obsessive about the same seeds in the same garden all harvesting on the same day. It didn't matter if I watered or not, there was always some that got stuck. I think the "don't water and they grow differently" was a rumor started on the net that took a life of its own.
Since I must have the same seeds in the same garden harvest at the same time, I originally did the room jump and ensuring that all plants could be read with the "inspection" sign. If not, I'd leave and come back. However, I found it to take forever since I have a lot of gardens. Now, I will hold off on harvesting for a day (or two) and that will allow the behind plant(s) to catch up.
--> All plants take one less growing day than WW says. Technically, they do take the number of days that they state because the initial and final harvest day both count; however, in mathematical terms it's one day less. It does not affect revenue after each harvest but it does change the number of days until the veggies can be compared equally and how soon your 100% profit begins.
For example: WW says you can replant and have new carrots in 8 days. The carrots need 7 growing days but when you include the harvest day as an official day, it is 8.
-->Start up cost and how long until profitability. The numbers do change, slightly, so I will be updating this every few months but it'll give everyone a good starting place. (starting place, get it, starting your garden... okay nevermind, i got it--lol.)
-->How much KC do you need to get started? Let's use 70-80 seeds per garden.
..~~Cabbages, Carrots, Corn, Strawberries & Tomatoes:
...........$4500-$5000 KC start-up per garden. (Room $1,000 + Seeds $3500-4000)
..~~Pumpkins & Watermelons:
...........$4150-4600 KC start-up per garden. (Room $1,000 + Seeds $3150-3600)
Watermelons and Pumpkins are a slightly cheaper start up but give you less profit in the long run. However, if you are pressed for time, you'll save a lot of time bc you won't have to sell as many veggies in one sitting since they always generate 1/plant. I enjoy my watermelon/pumpkin gardens much more!

To support the research, I bought the Jelly Bean plant! See bullet three for my stats. It's going to take a while to get good results. Bullets 1 & 2 summarize information gathered from another thread (-->Jelly Bean Plant<--).
- Takes one day longer than the Donuts and Collie Bone. Since the Donuts/Collie Bones are ready 6 days after harvest, the Jelly Beans are ready 7 days after harvest. Just like the carrots, they will always be ready on the same day of the week. Sallyanne said, "It's definitely not a money maker, and your pets don't talk about farm fresh produce when they eat the jelly beans"

ORIGINAL MESSAGE THAT WAS ON POST #1 BELOW:
Hi! I started gardens for KC about 3-4 weeks ago. I have 8 gardens of carrots, each on different daily cycles so we will have daily KC. (Yes, I mean *I* as little red refuses to do the work bc it was my idea.)
For the past three weeks, I've been keeping track of harvest days with an excel spreadsheet. I've had overlapping and each set of carrots were ready to harvest in 7 days (instead of 8 ). The pop up still says "8 days to reharvest" but it is clearly 7 days. Has anybody else noticed this? Is this a glitch? --OR-- Was the cycle shortened way back when Nefaria supposedly messed with the gardens and WW just didn't update the pop up? Does anyone know? (If it is intentional by WW, carrots are by far the most profitable gardens.)
I want to know bc if it is the norm to harvest in 7 days, I'd like to combine the two sets of gardens that have a lower number of carrots (23 and 22 seeds) but I do not want to do that if it is just a glitch bc we need daily KC.

ORIGINAL POST #3
Yes, they are but not by much with an 8-day cycle. I've got a huge spreadsheet on it. I can upload it later if anyone is interested. Below is an example of 20 plants each when the crops are all close to harvest (almost 4-months) so it's an equal/accurate representation of what they yield. It's not lined up but it gives you an idea. If someone wants the spreadsheet so its clearer, just let me know.
20 SEED CROP <--> POTENTIAL Rev/112 days <--> Crops/112 days <--> ACTUAL Yield/112 Days
Carrots <--> $3920 <--> 14.0 <--> $3920
Strawberries <--> $3360 <--> 11.2 <--> $3300
Corn <--> $3360 <--> 11.2 <--> $3300
Tomatoes <--> $3360 <--> 9.3 <--> $3240
Watermelons <--> $3200 <--> 16.0 <--> $3200
Pumpkins <--> $3200 <--> 16.0 <--> $3200
Cabbages <--> $2987 <--> 12.4 <--> $2880 Last edited by RedBear; 06-22-2009 at 03:46 PM.. Reason: removed images, need to make room for stats as some veggies are done. I did a cycle of planting five each day so I would always have some to harvest and it seems to be 7. Maybe it is all in how the days are counted. I mean if they count the current day as one of the eight? | | | 11-28-2008, 02:17 AM | #5 | --pls. ask-- Gift Guru Join Date: Aug 2007 Posts: 9,357 | Re: Carrot's Cycle Shortened No, they don't do that. My Garden #1 always harvests on Thursday. That's only 7 days. I hope its not a glitch! | | | 11-28-2008, 06:22 AM | #6 | Gift Guru Join Date: Feb 2008 Posts: 2,444 | Re: Carrot's Cycle Shortened I was really bummed when they lowered the amount of kinzcash that strawberries sell for and lengthened their growth cycle. I have several full strawberry gardens. You just can't count on them staying the same. Carrots are the most profitable now but who knows 6 months from now what will be. | | | 11-28-2008, 09:30 AM | #7 | Gift Guru Join Date: Jun 2007 Posts: 18,396 | Re: Carrot's Cycle Shortened you always have the best information I hadn't noticed but my gardens are so mish mashed on when stuff was planted | | | 11-28-2008, 09:39 AM | #8 | Webkinz :) Join Date: Apr 2008 Posts: 1,095 | Re: Carrot's Cycle Shortened Hi Red Bear....
On my accounts, I too had kept track for a long time (2 months between April-June).
I had noticed that they would SAY 8 days on a crop, but, that would INCLUDE the planting day and the HARVEST day. (but, once you harvested, that now became the harvest day.....)
So, it worked kind of like this on something that said 8 days---such as carrots:
DAY 1 : SUNDAY planted
DAY 2 : MONDAY raked
DAY 3 : TUESDAY raked
DAY 4 : WEDNESDAY raked
DAY 5 : THURSDAY raked
DAY 6 : FRIDAY raked
DAY 7 : SATURDAY raked
DAY 8 : SUNDAY harvested/replanted (this now goes back to day one)
So, made it REALLY easy with carrots---they are an 8 day crop--I have mine set up for one crop to harvest EACH day of the week...or almost each day of the week.....I have 5 carrot crops and one melon/donut crop that is a 7 day (which means it harvests 1 days SHY of a week).
I do the carrots even when people have been trying (yeah, I had someone PM me to tell me I am growing the wrong crops....WOW!!) to tell me that others are more profitable, as it is very easy to do them, as unlike strawberries, I can QUICKLY look at a carrot and know DOES it need raked? DID I rake it? DID it get harvested? ect....also, for a crop of 100 carrots, 1-3 carrots yield each, it comes out as an average of 200 per crop...I can tell right away when webkinz world is being GENEROUS (I got 225 one day...) or being stingy...( I got 170 the other day....) I never ever water....and I do not miss any fields or days of raking/harvesting....so, I just take a quick glance at the total when I am done.
Well, hope this helps....
fluffrnuttr
ps--having my gardens set up like this gives me about 1400 kc a day from the carrots. If you do decide to rotate the crops so they harvest each on a different day, you can do that slowly, by allowing a field that is fully matured to SIT ONE DAY. (harvestable items have 2 days to be harvested before they will rot.) And, you will not lose any money or anything. GOOD luck....tell little bear you are having a BLAST gardening....he is missing out on ALL the fun. Also, it takes me about 20 minutes a day to do mine this way...rake 5 fields, harvest 1 field, sell 200 items at the w-shop.

and its kinda hard to take care of the strawberries when they need to be raked. __________________ ~"Embrace Your Awesomeness!"~

I even dug them up and replanted them when I harvested the others and the same thing happened. Weird. __________________ Happy owner of many Webkinz | | | | | | Thread Tools | | | Display Modes | Linear Mode | Posting Rules | You may not post new threads You may not post replies You may not post attachments You may not edit your posts HTML code is Off
