I tried to get a variety of positions in the tournaments to answer your question of if different places get different points, and I also did it in both the 50 and 175 point tournaments to answer your question of if they differ:
What I was surprised to notice is that there IS a catalog of the scoring criteria in the tournament arena! If you go to "Prizes and Statistics" and click the Information "i," it will give you the process by which the points are determined... However, these DO NOT compare to the empirical results that I received during my testing! This is what I found: 50 prize Tournament
1st place - 5 points
2nd place - 2 points
3rd place - 2 points
4th place - 1 point
5th place - 0 points
Below 5th place - 0 points 175 prize Tournament
1st place - 5 points
2nd place - 3 points
3rd place - 2 points
4th place - 2 points
5th place - 1 point
6th place - 1 point
7th place - 1 point
Below 7th place - 0 points Note: 8th place in the 175 tournament MAY give 1 point (I did not place 8th while testing)
What I found interesting is that the 50 tournament adds 2 points to the rating in both second AND third places! Also, that differs from the 175 tournament because the latter gives 3 for second and 2 for third. You can see there are definitely more points for the 175 tournament than the 50 one.
As for your question of what a "good" ranking is... That is difficult to answer because it varies from person to person and there isn't really a certain mark to cross that makes your rating better than anyone else's. The highest ranking I have seen on WI is 9377. I think that a very good ranking is anywhere above 1000. I don't play in the tournament arena often at all, but when I do I usually win (because I play Polar Plunge!) and my ranking is currently 514, so I think that's pretty average. I think that anywhere above 1000 is a VERY good ranking to have.
They took out the leaderboard in the Newzpaper when they removed the high scores list. Hopefully it will return someday with accurate information. Last edited by monkeecj; 08-16-2009 at 02:29 PM.. Reason: Correcting highest tournament ranking |
