My Mom surprised me with Chippy a couple weeks ago. Ever since, he's spent most of his days with our cat, Flanny - staring out the windows, watching the squirrels and chipmunks prepare for winter, occassionally finding himself distracted by a lone moth or caterpillar.

But Chippy especially loves to watch the chipmunks outside scrurry about, running up and down trees, around the lawn, across the driveway, through the woods - all in search of more nuts and acorns! And sometimes they all chase each other around just to be silly!

I thought Chippy was happy just watching, knowing that we have plenty of food and friends for him inside, where it's warm and dry. Well, apparently, I was wrong. When I opened the door today to let Flanny outside for a bit, Chippy ran out with him! He hung out on the steps for a little bit, just taking in his new surroundings.

(ignore the fact that Flanny looks mean. LOL. He doesn't appreciate a camera flash when he's trying to chomp on some weeds!)

But then, Chippy spots a Chipmunk sitting on a tree stump, only 20 feet away! (It's not just any Chipmunk - it's our buddy Pasquale! He's the smallest and friendliest of the three Chipmunks who live in the front yard/woods.)

Intrigued, Chippy runs right over to introduce himself! Unfortunately, the Pasquale mistook Chippy's friendly curiosity, and he got a little spooked. He promptly ran up a tree to hide. Chippy perches himself on the stump where Pasquale just sat, and waited for him to come back.

Once he realizes Chippy is a friendly visitor, Pasquale slowly begins inching down the tree to check Chippy out.

Chippy introduces himself, and they beome fast friends!

Pasquale, being the jokester that he is, even teased Chippy a little - pretending he could only sit in one position all day too! "Look, we're twins!" Pasquale joked.

They sat and talked for a bit, then Chippy asked Pasquale if he'd ever played hide and seek. (Chippy and Flanny play all the time! LOL) Pasquale never had! So Chippy decided he'd teach him. Chippy explained, "I'll count to 10. You go hide! Once I find you, then it's your turn to find me." Pasquale laughed, and said he was ready. Chippy started counting, and Pasquale ran off behind Chippy.

But what's going on? Pasquale isn't hiding! Maybe he didn't understand afterall...

7... 8... 9... "BOOOO!!!!" Pasquale came running up behind him and yelled "BOO!!"

Chippy jumped so high, he almost hit his head off a tree branch above him! Pasquale couldn't stop laughing. The two fell to the ground, rolling around laughing until their sides hurt.

Then Pasquale told Chippy he had to get home with some acorns for dinner, or his brothers would get mad. They said their goodbyes, and Pasquale ran off into the woods.

Chippy looked around for a couple minutes, until finally he found an acorn of his own!

As soon as he picked it up, a huge smile spread across his face, and he was beaming! Since it was starting to get dark, he called out to Flanny, and they both hurried back inside. And what did they do once they got back in the house? Sat in the window together, of course!

Haha, I know, it's not quite the cat vs. lion, but I thought it was kinda cute!

UPDATE!

Chippy went out again today to visit his new friend.

They met up on the rocks, near Pasquale's house.

It was a short visit, since Pasquale's busy gathering food for winter. But Chippy stayed outside for a while, helping Pasquale gather plenty of acorns for his family. Chippy even found some really colorful leaves that he gave to Pasquale to help decorate his house for Fall.
