§-Rings of Time-§ From the author of Among the Stars comes a tale of daring . . . four weary time travelers against a corrupted ruler and enraged townspeople. Can one lost boy make a difference midst all of the lawnessness?

A monstrosity, obstructing far off places from view. It is ever present; a place of refuge when asked to be, but later morphing into a nightmare, a trap. The wise learn to respect it, to heed its warnings. The forest can be both inviting and repulsive.

-----Prologue-----
Spoiler: show

A young man scampered through the underbrush. He took hurried, frantic breaths which were seen clearly in the cold night air. His unruly black hair was wet from the snow that fell steadily from the heavens, but he didn’t seem to notice.

He didn’t know what to do. He could just barely remember who he was. A name was all. His subconscious told him it was his name. But it wasn’t one he liked; in fact he thought it awful. And he knew where he was from, but he wasn’t safe there anymore. Maybe one day he could return. But not yet, not for a long while.

An owl called out to him, its screech wafting through tree branches. He quickly turned his head as a snap of twigs and rustle of leaves were heard from somewhere close by. A feeling of sick apprehension overcame him as he ran away from the mysterious sounds. They were coming, they had followed him! The same men who had driven him from his homeland. He weaved his way in and among the tall oaks and poplars, hurriedly placing one foot in front of the other. His worn leather boots slapped against the frozen ground. But they wouldn’t find him this time.

His rough and weathered hand reached up to grasp the simple iron ring, hanging from a rope necklace around his neck. The travelers will return . . . phrases from a lifelong prophecy echoed throughout his mind. The hunted will rise up. Iron and gold, silver and crystal will be bound together, never to come apart.

-----Chapter One-----
Spoiler: show

“Logan, it’s late! Get up already!” Mrs. Walsh called out to her son for the third time that morning. She whipped back the bed sheets with an experienced flick of the wrist, and strategically poised her broom, ready to prod the sleepy teenager out of bed. But her household weapon was still. Several pillows had been shaped into the lifeless and limp shape of a body. She blew out a gust of air, which sent loose hair strands flying to the side of her face.

“I’ve fell for it again!” She stomped the floor with annoyance, and grudgingly resumed her chores. Meanwhile, her active and busy mind kept the image of her wayward boy ever vivid. Remembering his playful blue eyes, her own clouded over. She tried to console herself; he had run off like this before and had always come back before the next meal.

----§----

Logan sighed dreamily, a contented grin playing at his face. The late afternoon sun shone down to warm him, and the gentle coo of a morning dove emerged from a clump of snow laden bushes. His feet skidded on a patch of ice. How he wished he had chosen boots instead of a worn out pair of tennis shoes! This forgetfulness was to be expected however. He had left suddenly to escape the wrath of mother’s broom. Now his bare toes were numbly cold without any socks, and his hands had turned a dark shade of reddish purple, for they had no coverage either. Only the idea that if he kept moving he would have less trouble made him push on.

He was nearing a fork in the road, with the woods looming far off to the right. A decision was soon made to approach the latter. At first Logan hustled along with a slight skip in his step, but after the reality of the distance dawned upon him, that vanished. He was soon dragging his feet, his backpack trailing behind.

It wasn’t until the tall trees of the forest where a few feet away, that his walk became noticeably lighter. No real plan had been formed as to where and why he was going this way. He guessed it was just because he needed to get escape from the aches and overall pains of home and his mother’s nagging voice. This was a chance to clear his conscience . . . of absolutely everything. With that in mind, he closed his heavy eyelids and drank in the many smells and sounds of the wilderness. There was a strong pine scent, mixed with the unpleasant aroma of his filthy sweatshirt. Another mistake on his part. No coat had accompanied him on this little journey.

Minutes later, the adventuresome lad was completely surrounded by the unknown. It was almost as if the wild had swallowed him up. There was nothing but trees, as far as the eye could see. To the north, south, east, and west nothing was seen but timber. It was ever so slightly unnerving to a boy of fifteen. Given, he had been this far from home more than once, but had never endeavored to explore the wood. From which direction had he come? Everything was a blur, every sapling and spruce looked like the other, absolutely nothing that looked familiar.

Wandering to the right, then to the left and so forth, he began to envision a man waiting for him a distance off. Surely it was just his imagination! No one dressed so strangely. This mirage -for Logan reassured himself that the figure watching him was not real- was clad in an outfit he reckognized as being from some sort of medieval time period. His pants were a hunter green and perhaps several sizes too small. They stuck to his long, thin legs like tights. His shirt was quite the opposite, being the same color but made of skimpy material and much too big for his slender frame. A hood, gloves, belt, and pouch adorned the outfit.

The boy gasped as a glistening sword was thrust from the man’s sheath. This was no fantasy.

-----Chapter Two-----
Logan could feel blood freezing within his veins. The stranger began approaching him slowly, placing one foot cautiously in front of the other. He cut a comical figure easing along like a tortoise, when he was the one with a weapon. Logan remained stationary. He had come to the decision that he couldn’t possibly escape from such a valiant warrior as this. Morale was low as he admitted to himself that soon he would be tasting death.

A brilliant beam of light bounced off the sword as the man raised it in the air. In a flash he had grabbed the boy, practically lifting him from the ground. Logan could feel steel against his throat. He closed his eyes and hoped desperately that it all would be over quickly. Hasty prayers emerged from his lips, pleading for acceptance.

Seconds flew by, and then minutes. In an act of bravery, Logan opened an eye to see what was holding things up. His gaze was met by that of the enemy. Logan was helped to his feet. An outstretched hand sprung towards his side. “Brom of Saxony.”

What was happening? First stalked and then assaulted, now greeted by an erratic knight! Logan knew not what to expect next. His hand shook as it reached out to grasp that menacing hand. Almost immediately, he jerked it away from the foreigner’s touch. The interaction had been extremely unpleasant to him.

“What do you want?” He shouted at Brom, examining the man’s roguish features for any further signs of friendliness. Nothing. The search was fruitless. Now there weren’t any indications whatsoever that would tell him the knight meant no real harm. Logan gulped. His legs gained consciousness and bounded away like those of a gazelle.
