Chapter 1
Spoiler: show
Chapter 1
Wednesday, May 5th, 7:49 am

“Mady! Wake up or you’ll be late for school!” my mom called from the kitchen. I drowsily got out of bed, and a chill shot up my spine as my feet touched the cold floor.
“I’m coming, I’m coming,” I mumbled as I walked, half-asleep, to my closet. I carefully chose a grey and yellow floral tank with my favorite jean capris. As I looked in the mirror to examine myself, I realized that although my outfit was adorable, my straight chocolate-brown hair stuck out in all directions, and frizzy pieces poked out from my scalp. “Yikes,” I muttered, and picked up my hairbrush. I quickly ran it through my hair, and double-checked it in the mirror to make sure all the frizzies were taken care of. I shoved my school books into my shoulder bag, and lugged it down the stairs (darn those textbooks!).
“You don’t have to stay after school today, do you?” my mom asked as I scrambled to the kitchen. I thought for a second as I pulled a box of Cheerios out of the cabinet.
“No, I don’t think so,” I answered. She turned to me as I poured my cereal into a bowl, while she fastened an earring.
“I have to go in early today, and I’m not done getting ready yet. Can you make your sister a bowl, too, before I have to drop her off at the babysitters?” my mom asked as she munched a Special-K bar. Reluctantly, I agreed, and my mom thanked me as she rushed upstairs to put on her make-up. I grabbed her favorite cereal out of the cabinet, poured milk in the bowl, and brought it to the living room.
“Here you go, Izzy,” I said to my 3-year old sister as she giggled at Ni-Hao Kai Lan and meowed. She got down on all fours and began to lap up the milk in the cereal. on TV. She snatched the bowl out of my hands
Yes, my sister likes to pretend she's a cat. Not my problem (usually). My pocket vibrated, and I flipped open my outdated EnV2. It was a text from Hannah, one of my best friends. Where r u? I can hear the bus! my screen read.
"Crud, I forgot!" I shouted as I ran to the front hallway to get my backpack. "Bye mom, bye Izzy!" I shouted as I burst through my door and ran to the bus stop. Panting, I caught my breath as the bus pulled up.
"One second to spare, Mady," Joey, my other best friend, said. "You're cutting it close, you know," he teased as we got on the bus.
"Yeah, yeah; I made it, didn't I?" I countered as Joey, Hannah, and I walked to the back seats of the bus. We each plopped our backpack on a seat and sat down as the bus thrusted forward. Hannah flipped her long, wavy blonde hair over her shoulder as she turned to me, her eyes bright with excitement.
"Oh em gee, Mads, did you hear? So last night Monica Walters TOTALLY posted on Jayla Hall's profile that-" Hannah started, updating me with all the current gossip for our 8th grade class; my laptop was confiscated due to my not-so-great test grade in Pre-Algebra. Stupid Mr. Phillips gave me a 53. But hey, I knew more than I didn't! That should count for something.
"My ears! They're bleeding!" Joey moaned dramatically from the back seat. He yanked his shaggy blonde hair from the roots in desperation. He hated girly gossipy stuff (or so he said). Hannah and I rolled our eyes, giggling.
"Hey, did you do your Writers Notebook entries for language arts?" I asked Joey, changing the subject.
"Writers Notebook entries? That was today?!" Joey's eyes popped out of his head, and he scrambled through his backpack for a pencil. He grabbed his notebook and began to furiously write.
"Typical Joey," Hannah teased, poking him in the ribs.
"Not now," Joey muttered as his pencil flew across the page. "Must... write..." he said in a monotonous voice, as Hannah and I laughed.
"We have science today, right?" Hannah asked. I nodded, smiling. Everyone loved our science class. Our teacher, Mr. Quentin, was the coolest non-kid we'd ever met, and all the students loved him. He was always nice and funny, and he made class actually kind of fun.
"In the morning. But our afternoon classes are cancelled," I said. "We have that assembly, remember?" I said. Joey threw his pencil down.
"Are you serious?" he whined. "I just wrote all of this for nothing!" Hannah poked him and laughed. "Wait, what's the assembly for?" he asked.
"I think it's the Quarterly Character awards," I rolled my eyes. At the end of every academic quarter (10 weeks), the school gives an award to the kid that displays the most character in each grade. Some nerd, weird kid, or teacher's pet wins every single time, so it's pretty boring. I'd probably rather go to class.
"Ew," Hannah groaned. "I'll bet you ten dollars Olivia Gregory was at least nominated," Hannah laughed. Olivia Gregory is a member of virtually every club in our school, if not some sort of president or captain of it. We pulled up at school and everyone flooded into the halls.
"Get to class, get to class," the hall monitors said as they corralled the chatty girls into classrooms and broke up swooning couples.
"I hate those dang hall monitors," Joey muttered as he turned the dial on his locker. Grace Malitz popped out of nowhere, her neon orange sash blinding our eyes.
"You know, I can report you for saying that," Grace said, threatening him. Joey mumbled an apology, and she walked off to annoy other kids.
"You know, I can report you for saying that," Joey mimicked in a very squeaky voice. Hannah and I cracked up, and we all headed off to science together.
