Saturday, June 16th: 12noon KT - Ultimate Experiment Station $2875

"Oh, wow! I am so late," I say to myself as I try to catch my breath.
I was supposed to be at Arte's nearly an hour ago.
He wanted me to help him stock the front of the store.

My alarm didn't go off. Isn't it always the case that it doesn't go off when it's most important?
And howcome it always goes off at 2 in the morning when you don't need it to??
Anyways, now here I am, running down the street, looking like a maniac.
"I've really got to talk to Arte about getting a Humvee or something." I say to myself
"Of course, after he yells at me for being late, he may not let me in the store again."

"Ding, ding, CLANG!" the bell over the shop door rings and then flies across the room as I throw the door open. I barely even notice.
Sweaty, and out of breath, I collapse into the nearest prismatic chair.
"I'm here!" I shout as I look around for Arte.
"Hey Arte? Where are you? I've come to help you unload the stuff!" I shout!
Arte sticks his head out from behind a very large crate.
"Why is it that everyone is always running into my shop like that?" he growls.
"This is my Curio Shop, not a racetrack! People come flyin' in here, fresh from the Arcade or Quizzy's, with their KinzCash all crumpled up in their sweaty little hands, expecting me to drop everything and wait on them! Why do they always have to wait until the last minute? Don't they know how to read a clock? And look what you did to my bell!" He shouts as he walks over to pick it up.

"You deserved to get slag today in the mines, acting all foolish like this!" he says!
"Good thing I have good people like Lucky1026 who get my gem of the day, cause they deserve 'em!"

I was tempted to defend myself and the shoppers.
After all, some of the items Arte sells are quite expensive and take a lot of work to afford.
But, given my current lateness, I thought it was best that I keep my mouth shut and wait for Arte to finish his rant.

"And another thing!" Arte shouts!
"I can't stand the people who come in to look at what I have to sell and don't have enough money to buy anything! I had someone in here who wanted to buy the Grand Egyptian Column, but he didn't have enough money. He actually wanted me to put the item on hold for him! I'm not running a pawn shop here! What you see is what I've got. I swear, if it weren't for the money these customers have in their pockets, I wouldn't let half of them in the store."
Arte stares off in to space and appears to be mulling over his last thought.
Under his breath I think I hear him say, "I don't know if it's even worth giving him the list."

At this point I start to panic.
My mind races.
"Not give me the list? Oh no. That would be terrible. There are a lot of people who count on that information every day. I really don't want to let them down." I think.
I know if I want to get Arte back into a more generous mood that I need to choose my next words very carefully.

After a couple of minutes, I build up enough courage to speak.
"Um, Arte, you know..." I start...
He shoots me a look.
I take a deep breath and start again.
"You know that if I didn't get your item list each day you'd probably have a lot more customers to deal with." I stammer.
"I mean, because of that list, a lot of people only visit your shop when you have something they want to buy. I know it cuts down on on the browsers who don't have money."
"Hrumph." He grunts.
He looks down at the floor for a moment, and then his face softens.
"I suppose you're right, Merthyn. It wouldn't be any use to keep that information from them. That would just mean I'd have more people to deal with."
He reaches in his jacket pocket and pulls out a slip of paper.
"Here's the list. You'd better go let everyone know." he says.
I get up to leave.
"Oh, and Merthyn?" he snickers.
"Next time you rush over you may want to change out of those fuzzy bathroom slippers first!!!"
He turns sharply on his heel and heads to the rear of the shop laughing.
So, here's the list.
I've gotta go and find my sneakers....
