Sat, Jun 23: 3pm-Ancient Pyramid Lamp $1150 4pm-Delicate Swan Bed $1750
So you are probably all wondering why I couldn't get the list to you guys earlier, since I usually wake up early enough to get it out to you while you're sleeping. And I bet you're also curious about what happened to the suit of armor that was supposed to be in the Curio Shop. Well, it was an interesting night! I hope you're not too mad at me when you find out what happened:
I'm just settling down to sleep after writing to all of you when the phone rings. I can see on the caller ID that it's Arte's shop. "Hello?"
"Hey Merthyn. Are you busy?" he asks.
Hmmmm. This is strange. It's not like Arte to ask. "Busy? You DO know what time it is??"
"Remember that little bunny who was wandering around outside my shop the other day, Whitney?"
"Winnie," I correct him.
"She's a friend of yours, right?"
"Well, I kind of know her. Why?"
"There's a little bit of a problem. C'mon down to the shop and I'll explain everything when you get here."
I get out of my bed, grab my sneakers (not my fuzzy slippers, thank you for wondering) and head out the door.
When I arrive at the shop, Arte is already waiting for me by the front door. "I'm so glad you're here," he says. "I just don't know what to do with her."
Before I have a chance to ask what's wrong, Arte takes off toward the back of the shop and we head down yet another one of his long, twisting hallways.
As we approach the end of the passage, I can hear the familiar click- clacking of computer keys as well as a faint voice, "No, that won't work. Gotta make it fair. Let's try this, oh, no..."
I peek around the corner and see Winnie seated at the largest, and possibly oldest, computer I have ever encountered.
One entire wall of the room is covered with reel-to-real magnetic tape components.
The other wall is covered with metal plates filled with different colored blinking lights.
There are cables running everywhere, over my head, along the walls, even on the floor.
There are even vaccuum tubes, that look like little light bulbs, all lit up around the room!!
In the middle of it all is Winnie, continuing to mumble to herself, "Contest...what should I do...how did I make them so mad?"
I look back at Arte, "What is she doing here?"
"Well, you see. She wandered in here late yesterday afternoon and asked to use my computer. She'd heard that I had the biggest and best computer in Webkinz World and she had a lot of work to do. I have a big computer to help me keep track of all of inventory," he pauses, "and my money, but I guess it is good for other projects too."
I look back at the massive machine and think, "Well, it's the biggest alright..."
Instead I say, "You mean she's been here all night? She looks terrible!"
"Yep. I tried to get her to go to Dr. Quack's to get checked out, or at least to go home and get some sleep, but she said that she'd let everyone down and couldn't leave until she'd fixed it. I offered to help, but I'm afraid that I don't know what she's talking about."
Wow, I'd heard that Winnie had a rough few days, but I had no idea that it had gotten this bad.
"I'll see what I can do Arte."
"Thanks Merthyn. I knew I could count on you."
Arte heads back up to the front of the shop and I settle down in a lime green desk chair next to Winnie.
Winnie looks up at me with her sad bunny eyes and proceeds to explain to me everything that had happened in the previous few days and how upset she was by all of it.
She also tells me that she has figured out a possible solution, but that she is having trouble concentrating enough to get it worked out.
I agree to help her set it up using Arte's computer, and she promises to try to relax.
The sun is rising, as I feed in the last entry into the system, I look over at Winnie.
Sometime during the night she passed out in one of Arte's Egyptian beds.
I notice that even in her sleep she's mumbling, but that she looks much happier.
Her frown has been replaced by a small smile.
Looking back at the computer, I notice an icon on the desktop marked "Super Secret Stuff".
"Hmmm, I wonder what that's about. There's gotta be some great information in there."
Glancing first back at Winnie, and then at the doorway, I lean closely into the computer and click on the icon.
I am not prepared for what happens next.
The computer proceeds to let out a ear-splitting screech.
All of the lights on the computer banks on the wall flash excitedly and the magnetic tape reels start to spin out of control.
The vacuum tubes glow brighter and dimmer!
Frantically I search for a way to make the computer stop.
"Control, Alt, Delete? No. Escape? End? Argggg!"
I look back at Winnie and the poor dear is still passed out on the bed.
It's then that I notice the fuse box on the wall with "Mainframe Power" marked on it.
I dash to the wall and flip the switch.
Everything stops and the room is quiet except for Winnie's soft snoring.
I take a deep breath, cross my fingers, and flip the switch back on.
To my great amazement, the computer begins to make whirring and beeping sounds that sound like a normal computer booting up.
Breathing a sigh of relief, I quickly exit the room.
As I reach the doorway, I hear Winnie say "bunny clowns.... seventeen.... good..." her smile grows larger.
"There's no need for Arte to know about this little problem," I think to myself. "Hopefully he'll never find out."
At the front of the shop, Arte is just wrapping up a transaction for a Hockey Chair.
"Everything OK back there?" he asks.
"Yeah, everything is fixed now, but I'm afraid that Winnie has fallen asleep in one of your Egyptian Beds."
"Aw, that's OK. I won't be needing that for a while. Remember, I've got that big shipment of Suits of Armor coming in for later today. That is, if the delivery company ever gets their act together. First it was the mix up with the hot tubs and now they're telling me that my purchase order number is wrong. You'd think they'd be able to read the words on the boxes, but everything these days seems to be done with computers talking to each other. I'm afraid I just don't understand it all." He stares off into space for a moment.
"By the way, thanks for taking care of things Merthyn. This sort of thing just isn't my area."
He reaches into his jacket pocket, "Here's the list. Now, you go home and get some sleep."
It wasn't until Arte woke me up with his phone call this morning about the Kinz Posted list that I realized the problems my curiosity had caused.
I'm not sure if Arte has figured out yet what I did, but I'm sure he's going to be "barking mad" when he does.
So, here's the list for tomorrow.
Wish me luck today, I'm going to need it.
