Monday June 4th: 4pm KT - Thoughtful Think Tank $2300!
I showed up at Artes shop as usual.
Arte was busy so I browsed around a bit.
It's always fun to visit Arte's shop because it's filled with all kinds of interesting stuff.
I had heard that he used to be an adventurer and traveled the world.
Arte never talked about it much. In fact, I can't recall him ever talking about it.
When Arte got through with what he was doing,
he came over and sat down in an old "beat up" chair.
I couldn't help but notice how he and the chair went together so well.
"Whew", Arte said, wiping the sweat off his brow!
"I need a break!"
I took a seat nearby and waited for Arte to relax a bit.
"Arte", I ask. You used to travel all over the world, didn't you"?
"Yeh", he replies. "I've done my share of traveling!"
"But I never hear you talk about it", I say to him!
"Nobody wants to hear my old stories", he answers.
"I would love to hear one", I reply!
He looks away and drawls, "Well, I don't know!"
"Please Arte", I plead. "Let me hear about one of your adventures!"
"If I don't like it, I'll never ask you for another one!"
Arte thought it over before he gave in.
"Since you put it that way, I guess I can share one story with you", he states!
I sit upright in my chair, anxious to hear every detail of Arte's story!
This ought to be good, I tell myself!
He takes a breath and begins, "I guess I'll tell you about my kayaking adventure in Alaska".
"It was one of the coldest days, I've ever experienced." Arte pauses, as if to collect his thoughts.
"I was up there doing some scouting for a mining expedition I had planned."
"To reach the area I wanted to see, I needed to kayak across this large lake."
"I had paddled a long way out, when the wind started to pick up and it started getting colder!"
"The temperature was dropping quickly and I was miserable."
"Ice started to build up on the lake and it got harder and harder for me to paddle!"
Arte pauses again, letting the suspense build a little before he continues.
"It wasn't long before I knew I was in trouble..serious trouble!"
"Wow, what did you do", I ask, interrupting his story?
Arte pauses again and continues,
"I knew I had to do something if I was going to survive on that lake"!
"I searched through my gear and all I could find were some matches and my journal."
"Tearing pages from my journal, I started a small fire in the hull of my kayak"
"I was hoping to create just enough heat to keep myself going!"
"I knew I wouldn't last long, if I didn't", he states. "My fingers were going numb!"
By now, I am completely engrossed in his story, hanging on every word.
Arte's voice intensifies as he continues.
"I managed to get the fire going, but before I knew what happened,
the kayak catches on fire"!
Arte is sitting up now, it's as if he's reliving the moment.
"I managed to put the fire out, but not before it burned a hole in the bottom of the boat!"
"Water was pouring in, the kayak was sinking, and so I had to bail out".
I wait, but Arte just sits there in silence for a moment!
Anticipating more, I say to him excitedly, "Well, what happened next"?
Arte stands up and walks calmly to his desk.
Without a hint of urgency he replies,
"Oh, I managed to swim ashore and I finally made my way back to camp".
He looks around his desk, finds the list I came to get, and hands it to me.
"That's all", I exclaim in disbelief! "That's your story?"
"Oh no", Arte proclaims!
"There's an important lesson to be learned from what happened"!
"What's that", I ask in bewilderment?
He looks me right in the face and says,
"You can't have your kayak, and heat it too"!
He chuckles a bit, then disappears into the back of his shop.
I just stood there, my mouth agape, like I was frozen in time.
He had done it to me again! "That mangy mutt", I gasped.
I was upset. Not so much that he got me again, but because I never saw it coming.
"That's okay", I tell myself as I make my way back home.
"His time is coming", I mutter with delight.
"Oh yeh, his time is coming...", I smile!
