Leader: Electrabuzz1 with Autism Awareness (Pucker Fish)

Finish: 1:30 PM - 2:00 PM EST, Kinz Chat Plus, Kinzville Park, Room 25

To help us raise awareness about this ever growing condition please consider using an Autism Awareness Avatar and / or an Autism Awareness Signature during the month of April. The colour of Autism Awareness is blue. Let’s all dress our pets in Blue this April!! Are you planning on adopting a new pet soon? How about adopting a new pet and calling it an ASD related name?

Re: April is Autism Awareness Month

I so wish I could be there!

Re: April is Autism Awareness Month

I don't know where you got the information that blue is for autism awareness. I have never heard or read anywhere that this is the case. I have always heard and read that there is no one color for Autism Awareness, but that puzzle pieces in blue, teal, red, and yellow were the symbol of autism awareness and that the awareness ribbon for autism awareness was a ribbon with the puzzle design on it.

It is a campaign started by Autism Speaks.

WELCOME TO LIGHT IT UP BLUE

On the evenings of April 1 and 2, 2011, prominent buildings across North America and the world — including the Empire State Building in New York City and the CN Tower in Toronto, Canada — will turn their lights blue to raise awareness for autism and to commemorate World Autism Awareness Day on Saturday, April 2.
We’re aiming to light the world blue all throughout April — city by city, town by town — by taking action to raise autism awareness in our communities.

Maybe i'm wrong. I'll ask He.P. if i can make their pictures blue.

Re: April is Autism Awareness Month

Cool! Where are the parades going to be?

Re: April is Autism Awareness Month

Sensory Processing Disorder has a blue ribbon. Every child who has Autism has SPD but not every SPD child has Autism. The puzzle piece can represent so much of the disorder because not all children have the same symptoms, but yet all have the same disorder. There is so much that is not known of Autism. We have so much to learn.

Re: April is Autism Awareness Month

That's a good idea! I'll try to do that when I get on the next time. I think a good idea is to have some sort of thing where you buy webkinz and the money goes to that cause. Well, fighting Autism...

You'd have to talk with ganz about that. xD Good idea though!

That explains why I never heard of it. I don't follow that organization because they're all about 'curing' Autism. I have a learning difference on the Autism Spectrum (Asperger's Syndrome) and I don't want to be cured. Looking for a 'cure' to me suggests that there is something wrong with people with Autism. I personally don't believe there is anything wrong with us. We're just different than non-autistics, that's all. Despite what most people seem to believe, different doesn't mean bad. It's just different. Asperger's is part of what makes me who I am and, while I struggle with it, I don't want it taken away. Don't get me wrong, I love that WI is working on raising awareness, but what my wish is for raising awareness is that awareness would bring understanding and acceptance for people with Autism instead of making people want to 'cure' it like Autism Speaks wants to do.

Re: April is Autism Awareness Month

how do you join the parade?

That you for expressing this. My teenage son has Asberger's Syndrome, and it is nice to hear your perspective.

I still have a lot to learn about the disorder, but at least now we know more about why he is the way he is and it explains a lot about when he was younger. Having a child with Austism means that you have to re-learn how to parent so that it takes everything into account, including understanding his needs and behaviors.

Re: April is Autism Awareness Month

To me, Autism Awareness is about educating people about the spectrum, how to recognize the symptoms, and how to deal with individuals who have an ASD. So many people have no idea, or have many misconceptions about the disorder.

Some people are all about finding a cure - but I don't think I would "cure" my son if that meant it would change WHO he is (because he is a remarkable young man, unique in so many wonderful ways that I wouldn't change for anything), but I sure am doing my best to find treatments that will help him to overcome the issues that he faces so that he can live an independent, successful life.

thank you again, Electrabuzz, for all that you have done to kick off Autism Awareness Month.

Re: April is Autism Awareness Month

Oh wow - great ideas! I'm going to go buy a new pet tomorrow and give him an autism awareness name! Hopefully, I can find a BLUE pet too - that would make it perfect! Hugs to all the Autism families out there!!!
